Born in Los Angeles, Eric Avery spent his youth surfing in Venice, failing out of high schools and figuring out how to play music by tinkering for hours alone, something he spends a good deal of time doing still. He has played bass for a number of bands (most recently Garbage) but is primarily known as the bass player and co-founder of Jane’s Addiction who also created Lollapalooza.
Eric’s first foray in to film music was for Leonardo DiCaprio’s documentary The 11th Hour. Most recently he scored the Taormina Film Festival winner Show Me What You Got. Eric comes from a film family. His father Brian Avery is an actor best known for his role as Carl Smith—“the old make out king”—the jilted groom left at the altar at the end of The Graduate. Eric’s grandfather Arthur Piantadosi an Oscar winning Sound Engineer, after multiple nominations, won for All The Presidents Men.
Eric’s musical interests span from classical to electronic. A longtime supporter of the experimental orchestra Wild Up he is currently working on a future collaboration. Eric also collaborates with musician Josh Klinghoffer to create site specific modular electronic pieces, the inspiration for each series coming from the place in which the recordings are created.
